Broadway-First Baptist is another example of congregational involvement in Pipe Organ maintenance. James Musselwhite was especially interested in this project because his grandfather, F.W. Musselwhite had been an organist here in the 1920's.

A great deal of modifications had been performed on this organ over the years by various hobbyists, and much of their work had to be undone, before the organ could be expanded. To do this, all of the organ's mechanism was removed, and the pipes were laid out across the back and side pews.

Originally a theater organ, this instrument features typically large scale pipes. These bottom notes of the 8' Flute in the pedal are nearly twice as large as in a "normal" organ.

A 16' Lieblicht Gedackt from another dismantled organ was added in order to provide a foundation that was more subtle than the monstrous Bourdon 16'.

To give the layman an idea of how large the scale of the pedal ranks are in Broadway-First, all the pipes in the tower that Howard is touching in this picture would easily fit into the bottom C pipe of the Bourdon 16'.
